More from the past

More of Vic Shipton’s work.

These are 40 odd years old.

This cost 1 pound 75.

this one 2 pounds.

Word on the street was to get your tattoo done the earliest in the day, as the day went on ol’ Vic would get more and more drunk and it would show in his work.

  1. Got my first tat from Vic Shipton in 1956 when I was 12….It was 2 of his famouse Swollows with a name under each. Cost Half a crown each=2/6 or 12.5 pence. When he did mine he misspelt the word MUM he put MUN… I can confirm that he would work with a drink in one hand and his gun in the other. In those days he worked in his garden shed in north Romford, later he got a shop off Victoria road near the rail station. I remember at one time he was teaching his son the trade. I dont know if he went on to work at it, Back then if you lived in Romford and wanted a tattoo you went to Vic or a man in Tilbury….
